I went up the Gediminas' Hill the other day and, listening to the tunes coming from my headphones, and did what I enjoy most doing when I'm out wondering along the streets alone - looked down at the city. My City. The place so special and yet so ordinary... The buildings which have been there for ages speechlessly watching time pass by.
The last visit up the Hill has puzzled me. I realised that I can't really define what is so special about Vilnius. Okay, sure, we do have the bridge with Soviet sculptures, and Angel in Užupis, a monument to Frank Zappa, Ponia Rožė (you can meet her any day out in the Old Town) and a hell of a lot other stuff, but this is not it! Is it because of the feeling Vilnius gives you? Is that enough to justify my opinion? I guess many would say not, but - for me, it is. The feeling inside - isn't that what really matters? Like that joyful feeling you experience when the weather finally becomes something more like Spring instead of Winter and you just know that days will be getting longer now and warm sunny days are there waiting for you. Do you have physical proof of it? No, just emotional. A few days of good weather don't prove anything but you are sure that Winter is as close to an end as ever. You know it's true. So now you know how I feel about My City! It's the best because of the feeling it gives you. That special emotion, that doesn't only come from things and places in Vilnius, oh no - its people are the ones who are also responsible for it.
...people and relationships, and not money and possessions, isn't it what this life's about?
